July 12 - The Trip Home - Cheyenne, WY

The next morning we got up and continue east to Cheyenne, Wyoming. In 1992, I had done the volksmarch in Cheyenne in late May during a snow storm. I walked to the first checkpoint and returned to the stop. I didn't want to get sick since I still had to drive home. I only took event credit for that event.

This time the weather was hot, no chance of snow. The start point is in the same cowboy apparel store, Wrangler Western Wear, as it was 8 years ago. After registering, we headed out. The walk is quite interesting, going around the cowboy museum, the state house, and the airport. The check point is a restaurant -- with air conditioning. I took our start cards in while Emilie waited with MW. Since I was sweating, this was probably not a good idea.

We finished the walk and continued our trek east. Destination Nebraska. Since our trip, I have read the Stephen Ambrose book on the building of the transcontinental railroad: Central Pacific Railroad and the Union Pacific Railroad. Little did I know in July that we were driving parallel to that railroad track. In retrospect, I wish I had known.

We drove to Ogallala, Nebraska, where we again stayed in a Best Western.
